Which Type of Denture Adhesive Should You Use?

Dentures have come a long way from the uncomfortable, awkward prosthetics you heard your grandparents complaining about. Modern dentures are more comfortable, lifelike, and secure than ever before. Still, using an adhesive might result in more security and peace of mind. How can you decide which type of adhesive to use for your dentures in McKinney? Keep reading to learn more about the three types of denture adhesive and the unique benefits of each one.

Cream

Denture creams provide a strong, lasting hold and can seal out the majority of food particles. They typically come in tubes with an easily maneuverable tip that allows you to precisely control the amount of adhesive that you apply to the denture. Even better, they protect your gums from irritation. And often come in a variety of flavors.

To apply denture adhesive cream, simply apply it in short strips along the side of your denture that faces your gums. Then, press and hold it into place. For full dentures, biting down for a few seconds can help secure your prosthetics.

Powder

If you don’t like the texture of creams, then adhesive powder is a good alternative. This solution is easier to remove and offers a stronger hold that can last for up to 12 hours. All you have to do is sprinkle the powder into short strips along your dentures’ inner-facing surfaces. Then, just insert them and hold them in place.

Strips

Adhesive strips are easily applied and removed while also providing a hold that can last for the majority of the day. Each of the strips comes pre-cut, so you won’t have to worry about the mess that can accompany creams or powders. There is also zero risk of uneven application or uncomfortable textures.

One Thing to Know About Denture Adhesive

If possible, choose a zinc-free denture adhesive. Zinc can be toxic if too much of it is in your body. If you simply must use an adhesive that contains zinc, try to only apply it once a day and never use more than you need. More often than not, you don’t need as much as you think you do.

Denture adhesive has helped countless people enjoy complete smiles that look and feel more natural. However, if you’re using it because your dentures don’t fit as well as they used to, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment with a dentist in McKinney. They might be able to adjust your denture to the point that you don’t even need adhesive!
