Are Dental Implants Really All That Great?

If you’ve spent any time at all talking to people about replacing missing teeth, you’ve probably heard plenty about dental implants. They’re often touted as the greatest thing to ever happen to tooth replacement, and even to dentistry in general.

After all that talk, you may wonder how dental implants could possibly be worth the hype. If you’re curious, here are a few reasons why dental implants are so celebrated.

Saving the Jaw

The body is remarkably efficient at making the most of its finite nutrients, which unfortunately can have some negative effects on the jaw in the case of tooth loss. If you’re missing a tooth, that area of the jaw will begin to shrink from disuse.

Over time, this can begin to have noticeable effects on your appearance. Your face will have less support, causing it to sag and wrinkle prematurely.

Dentures and bridges don’t do anything about bone loss, but dental implants can stimulate the jaw and stop it from shrinking. This is one way in which they are far superior to other tooth replacement options.

Incredible Durability

As dentistry has advanced, most methods of tooth replacement have become pretty durable. A single set of dentures can easily last for 7-10 years if maintained well, and bridges last slightly longer.

While that’s certainly impressive, it’s nothing compared to dental implants. Around 95% of dental implants are successful at 20 years if maintained well, and often last as long as 30. It’s no exaggeration to say that dental implants outlast other tooth replacement options two to one, and that they can easily last a lifetime.

Powerful Bite Strength

Dentures and bridges can be useful in helping you eat, but in many cases, they can be a little lacking in support. Dental implants, on the other hand, have all the stability of the jaw itself standing behind them. This affords them much greater bite strength than other tooth replacement options, which lets you eat with them more effectively.

As you can see, dental implants have a lot going for them. If you’ve ever wondered why people were so excited about them, now you know that they’re worth the hype.
