AI Revolutionizes Early Gum Disease Detection

Healthy gums compared to gingivitis Tooth decay is not the only threat to your dental health. Gum disease is equally devastating, but a new study offers promising results for detecting the oral infection early. The Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) made a groundbreaking discovery with the detection of early gum disease (gingivitis) using artificial intelligence (AI). With at least 50% of adults having a form of gum disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the cutting-edge technology can allow for early detection to stop the infection in its tracks. Here’s how you can avoid tooth loss and improve your wellness using the latest technologies to keep your gums healthy.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection caused by bacteria found in plaque and tartar buildup from poor oral hygiene. The earliest stage is gingivitis, which causes gum inflammation, redness, and bleeding. Gingivitis is easy to treat with improved dental hygiene. However, with no treatment, it can quickly progress to periodontitis.

At this point, the infection can destroy the supporting structures of your teeth, including your jawbone, which can lead to tooth loss. Bacteria from the infection may also enter your bloodstream through the pressure of regular chewing. This can wreak havoc on your overall well-being, increasing your risk of several health issues, including Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy complications.

Benefits of Early Detection

Tooth loss is only a fragment of the issues you can experience from gum disease. It is linked to various systemic diseases from chronic inflammation, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Early detection and treatment of gum disease can prevent many potentially deadly health conditions.

Published in the International Dental Journal, the study revealed that AI algorithms can use patient intraoral photographs to detect symptoms of gingivitis, including redness, bleeding, and swelling of the gums. When compared to a visual examination from a dentist, the AI system had over 90% accuracy in preventing oral and systemic conditions linked to gum disease.

As technology continues to enhance dentistry, invest in a dentist who regularly continues their training to provide the most advanced solutions. You can achieve a healthy mouth and body when choosing the latest innovations in dental care.
