Invisalign Rookie? Here’s How You Can Prepare for Them Like a Pro
June 6, 2025

Are you gearing up to start your teeth straightening journey with Invisalign? You get to join the club of millions of people who have taken this first step to being proud of their smile. But before you venture out into this world, you may wonder how you should prepare for your new clear aligners. Continue reading to learn some quick tips to help you start your treatment with confidence.
1.) Expect Some Soreness Initially
Invisalign works by applying gentle pressure to your teeth, helping to slowly move them into correct alignment. For them to be as effective as they are, you will have to have them in for 20 to 22 hours every day. Just as with any orthodontic treatment, you may feel sore for the first couple of weeks. You might also notice having altered speech or difficulty pronouncing certain sounds. Don’t worry, as it’s only temporary! Your mouth needs time to adjust to the trays, and you should give yourself some grace as you transition into wearing them.
2.) Brush After Meals
One thing that you’ll have to change in your routine is brushing your teeth after every meal. This will help ensure that your teeth stay healthy and nothing can affect the fit of your clear aligners. It will also help keep your Invisalign trays free from harmful bacteria, so your treatment doesn’t get any delays from other oral health issues.
3.) Build a Dental Kit
A great way to keep up with your dental routine is to build a travel kit that you can stash in a bag or take with you. Having a travel-sized toothbrush and toothpaste handy will ensure you can effectively clean out your smile no matter where you are. It’s also a good idea to pack some pain relievers and an extra clear aligner case, to be better prepared if you need either.
4.) Reduce Snacking Habits
The only thing that you can have when your Invisalign trays are in is water. Other foods or drinks can damage the aligners or get trapped between your teeth and the trays, leading to an increased risk of cavities. Additionally, frequently taking them out to snack can cause delays in the treatment plan, since you have to have the clear aligners in most of the time.
It’s not a bad idea to even start these tips before your first Invisalign appointment. It can help you get ready for when you start wearing the trays. Creating new habits can seem daunting, but in no time, you will add these to your routine, and it will feel like second nature!
